The University Legal Officer is responsible for the delivery of the University's legal services framework, and provides advice on legal issues affecting the University, principally to the Registrar, the Vice-Chancellor and other members of the senior staff.
Key functions
The main activities of the Legal Officer are:
- drafting and review of contracts and agreements;
- providing advice on interpretation of legislation and legal obligations affecting the University;
- drafting of University statutes and rules;
- providing advice on policy issues and policy drafting where legal issues are involved;
- liaising with and monitoring external lawyers.
Requesting legal advice
Staff are encouraged to discuss legal issues relating to QUT business or activities with the Legal Officer.
Requests for legal advice or legal services such as legal drafting can be made by telephone or email. Email requests should be accompanied by relevant documents and sufficient background information to enable the matter to be fully considered. Allow up to 2 weeks for a response, though an earlier response can be negotiated in urgent cases.
The Legal Officer has developed FAQs
on legal questions which arise regularly. Check the Resources
for legal agreements used on a regular basis.
External legal firms should not be approached or engaged directly without prior approval of the University Legal Officer. The only exception is where there is a standing or previously approved arrangement in place for the matter or transaction in question.
The Legal Office does not deal with all legal issues. Enquiries regarding research, consultancy and commercialisation contracts should be directed to the relevant department of the Division of Research and Commercialisation. Additionally, QUT has a Privacy Contact Officer, a Copyright Officer and an FOI Officer to whom queries on these matters should be directed in the first instance.
